Crop Raising

The crop raising program of the Haiti Agricultural Institute will stress the importance of saving water.  The institute will use as much harvested rainwater as possible to water the crops, reducing the use of irrigation water that could be used for other purposes.  The butterfly roof structures will act as funnels, guiding the water to one part of the structure where the water will flow down a drainpipe into a trough where it will then be stored.  The water trough will remain full as long as there is accurate rainfall in the area.  The troughs enable the people living at the institute to fill buckets and water vegetable gardens located at each of the housing units.  This concept will teach the students about recycling our resources and helping prepare for the future, where water will become more and more scarce.
